Lasting only 5-7 days on average once picked the protea needs putting in water as a matter of urgency after buying from a florist and even while still in the soil it requires copious amounts of water in order to prevent a build-up of salts in the soil. Often found to be cream, powder pink, crimson, or even a hue thereof proteas are a tough hardy evergreen tolerant to temperature variations both hot and cold and will survive in poor soil and exposed positions. When I create a tropical arrangement using artificial proteas I am mindful of not over adding them due to their size and not wanting to make them the overall focus but a wonderful added extra.
